As part of my summer 2023 European vacation, my friend and I had spent a few days in Barcelona, Spain. While there, we decided that we should also visit Andorra, a tiny country located just a few hours’ drive away. We booked a Viator tour that would take us to Andorra as well as France and a small village in Spain. Visiting three countries in one day was sure to be interesting!

We departed Barcelona around 7 AM and drove 1 ½ hours to Bagà, which is a small picturesque town in Spain. We enjoyed some croissants while our guide taught us a bit about the town’s history. Bagà was prosperous during the Middle Ages, and you can admire its medieval architecture as you wander around.

Soon we were off to France, where we visited the town of Ax-les-Thermes. The town is known for its thermal waters and spa resorts. After another brief history lesson, we were off to explore on our own. I was impressed by how the culture was distinctly French, despite being so close to the Spanish border. We stopped at a café for lunch and I was happy to practice my elementary French with the waitress. I loved being back in France, even for a short while!

After lunch, we headed to Andorra where we got our passports stamped and stopped at a viewpoint in the Pyrenees mountains (while trying not to blow away in the crazy winds). We learned that many Europeans visit Andorra, not only for skiing but also for tax-free shopping.

We made our way to Andorra la Vella, the capital city, which I was pleasantly surprised by. There was a decent amount of shopping and attractions, and also a million perfume shops for some reason. We made sure to buy some Jolonch (or “JLo”) chocolate that was recommended by our guide, and then spent some time exploring and window shopping. Before long, it was time for our 3-hour drive back to Barcelona.

Overall, I enjoyed the tour and was pleasantly surprised at the places we stopped at along the way. It was a great way to see Andorra, which I would have probably never visited otherwise. I can also now say that I’ve been to three countries in one day!
